Submission Requirements

Submission Requirements

Submit manuscripts to Athena: Journal of Social, Culture and Society through the journal’s official online submission system. This page specifies the files, metadata, and confirmations needed for a complete submission.

Consult Manuscript Preparation for formatting instructions and the relevant author policies for substantive requirements. Submission through OJS may require an author account; registration is not required to read the journal’s open-access articles.

1. SUBMISSION FILES

File Requirement
Main Manuscript Required. Upload an editable .docx file prepared using the official Athena template. A PDF alone does not replace the editable file.
Separate Title Page Required when author-identifying details are excluded from the review manuscript. Include the title, author names and order, affiliations, corresponding-author contact, and ORCID identifiers where available.
Supplementary Materials Upload where relevant. Give each item a descriptive filename and identify whether it is intended for assessment, publication, or confidential editorial use.
Supporting Documentation Supply where required by the applicable policy or requested by the editor. Examples include permission documentation and evidence of ethical approval.

Use the file categories available in OJS. If a confidential file cannot be clearly designated, contact the editorial office before uploading it. Do not assume that an ordinary supplementary file is hidden from reviewers or publication.

2. AUTHOR IDENTIFICATION AND REVIEW FILES

Follow the journal’s published Review Model. Where author identities are masked from reviewers, provide an anonymised main manuscript and a separate identified title page for editorial use.

  • Remove author names, affiliations, email addresses, and identifying headers from the review manuscript.
  • Check filenames, document properties, comments, and tracked changes for identifying information.
  • Cite previous work normally and avoid wording that unnecessarily identifies its authors as the submitting author group.
  • Place identifying declarations or acknowledgments in the separate editorial file and use clearly marked placeholders in the review version where necessary.

Anonymisation must not conceal information from the editors or alter the research account. Enter complete author information in OJS and provide all required disclosures through the appropriate channel. Public preprints remain subject to the Preprint Policy.

3. AUTHOR AND ARTICLE METADATA

Enter the following information accurately in the available OJS fields. Metadata must agree with the identified manuscript or title page.

  • Title: The complete manuscript title.
  • Abstract: The same abstract supplied in the manuscript.
  • Keywords: Enter each keyword or phrase separately where the system provides individual keyword entries.
  • Authors: Include every author in the agreed order, using publication names without academic titles. Do not invent a surname for a single-name author; request assistance if the form cannot represent the name.
  • Affiliations: Provide the department or faculty where relevant, institution, city, and country.
  • Contact Details: Provide a valid email address for each author and identify the corresponding author.
  • ORCID: Supply valid ORCID identifiers where available.
  • Language and Section: Select English and the appropriate available submission section. The website’s policy-menu sections are not manuscript submission categories.

Correct metadata errors promptly through the available system functions or the editorial office. Changes affecting authorship require the procedure described in Authorship and Contributorship.

4. DECLARATIONS AND SUPPORTING INFORMATION

Include the declarations required by the applicable policies, covering author contributions, funding, competing interests, ethical approval and consent, data availability, acknowledgments, and AI use. Manuscript Preparation specifies their presentation.

Use the comments-to-editor field or a clearly identified editorial document to disclose related preprints, overlapping work, relevant editorial relationships, or other information requiring editorial attention. If the form lacks a suitable field, contact the editorial office.

Do not upload identifiable participant records, signed consent forms, or restricted datasets to ordinary submission fields. State that required documentation is available and arrange an appropriate confidential channel if the editor needs to inspect it.

5. FEES AND PUBLICATION TERMS

No submission fee or APC payment is required to complete submission. Authors must review the Author Fees and Article Processing Charges policy before submitting. Applicable APCs are payable only after formal acceptance.

Articles accepted for publication are published under CC BY 4.0. Authors must have the rights needed to authorise publication under the journal’s terms, with any separately licensed third-party material clearly identified.

Submission does not itself publish or automatically apply CC BY 4.0 to the submitted file, transfer copyright, or change an existing preprint license. Full terms are provided under Copyright and Licensing.

6. BEFORE COMPLETING SUBMISSION

The submitting author should confirm that:

  1. The editable manuscript follows the official template and Manuscript Preparation instructions.
  2. The submission complies with the Originality / Plagiarism policy and is not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.
  3. All authors have approved the submission, author order, and contribution statement.
  4. Author and article metadata are complete and accurate.
  5. Review files follow the identification or anonymisation arrangements required by the Review Model.
  6. Required declarations and applicable supporting information have been supplied.
  7. Preprints and AI use have been disclosed as required by their respective policies.
  8. Third-party material has appropriate attribution and any necessary permission or other valid reuse basis.
  9. The author group has reviewed the published fees, copyright, and CC BY 4.0 publication terms.

7. SUBMISSION COMPLETION AND FOLLOW-UP

Complete the final submission step in OJS; uploading files to a saved draft does not necessarily complete submission. Check the submission record and retain its identifier for future correspondence.

Administrative acknowledgment confirms receipt, not acceptance or successful completion of peer review. Incomplete submissions may be returned for correction. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee publication.

For an existing submission, send corrected files through its designated workflow or follow the editorial office’s instructions. Do not create a duplicate submission merely to replace a file or correct metadata.
