Appeals

Appeals of Editorial Decisions

Authors may request reconsideration when a substantive scholarly or procedural error may have affected an editorial decision. This policy concerns manuscript decisions, including rejection without external review.

1. GROUNDS FOR APPEAL

  • A material factual or technical misunderstanding of the submitted work.
  • Relevant evidence or a response that appears to have been overlooked.
  • A documented departure from the published process or a relevant conflict that may have affected the decision.

Disappointment, publication urgency, payment offers, or disagreement unsupported by scholarly reasons are not sufficient grounds. A substantially new study is not automatically an appeal of the assessment of an earlier version.

2. SUBMITTING AN APPEAL

Send a reasoned appeal to athena@mediadigitalpublikasi.com with the subject line Editorial Appeal – [Submission ID]. Include:

  1. The manuscript title, submission identifier, and decision date.
  2. The specific decision being challenged.
  3. A point-by-point explanation of the alleged error and supporting evidence.
  4. Confirmation that the author group supports the appeal.

Submit promptly while the assessment remains current. Do not create a duplicate submission to lodge an appeal. Identify any person whose involvement presents a conflict so that the appeal can be routed appropriately.

3. INDEPENDENT CONSIDERATION

The editorial office acknowledges receipt and arranges assessment by a suitably qualified, non-conflicted editor who did not make the challenged decision. If no suitable internal editor is available, an independent external editor is engaged.

The original editor may explain the decision but must not be the sole assessor of the appeal. Relevant records, reviewer reasoning, author responses, and additional specialist advice may be considered under Confidentiality.

Authors are informed of significant delays. No fixed completion period or reversal is guaranteed, and no fee is charged for considering an appeal.

4. OUTCOME AND SUBMISSION STATUS

The appeal outcome may uphold the decision, reopen assessment, request revision or additional review, or replace the decision with a justified alternative. Reopening assessment does not mean acceptance. A reasoned outcome is communicated and recorded.

Once reconsideration is opened, the manuscript is again under consideration by Athena and must not simultaneously be under consideration elsewhere. Authors who have submitted elsewhere must disclose that status before reconsideration begins. They may discontinue the appeal by written notice.

Repeated appeals presenting the same grounds need not be reopened after a reasoned outcome. Material new evidence or a separate concern about the fairness of appeal handling may be assessed through the appropriate journal procedure.

Boundary with Other Policies: Complaints about conduct, service, discrimination, or policy administration belong under Complaints and Appeals. Allegations of misconduct and changes to published articles follow their respective integrity and correction policies. Where a concern also affects a manuscript decision, the journal coordinates the routes without requiring duplicate reports.
