Repository and Self-Archiving

Repository and Self-Archiving

Athena permits authors to deposit and share the submitted manuscript, Author’s Accepted Manuscript, and published Version of Record without an embargo. Additional journal permission is not required.

1. PERMITTED VERSIONS

Submitted Manuscript or Preprint
May be deposited before submission or during consideration. Preprint disclosure and eligibility follow Preprint Policy.
Author’s Accepted Manuscript
The author version incorporating accepted revisions may be deposited immediately upon acceptance, before publisher typesetting.
Version of Record
The final published article may be deposited and redistributed immediately upon publication, under its CC BY 4.0 license.

2. DEPOSIT LOCATIONS

Authors may use institutional or subject repositories, preprint servers, personal academic websites, and scholarly sharing platforms. This list does not restrict the wider redistribution rights granted for CC BY 4.0 content.

Prefer repositories with stable identifiers, clear version descriptions, and sustainable management. Observe valid third-party restrictions, privacy obligations, and the receiving platform’s terms.

3. VERSION IDENTIFICATION AND LICENSES

Identify the deposited version accurately. Do not label an unreviewed manuscript as accepted or published. Once publication occurs, add the journal citation and DOI link where possible.

Authors may apply an appropriate license to earlier versions where they control the necessary rights; CC BY 4.0 is encouraged. Acceptance or publication does not automatically change an earlier version’s existing license.

Preserve applicable attribution and license information when depositing the Version of Record. Full reuse conditions are provided under Licensing. No additional embargo or permission condition is introduced by this policy.

4. RECORD STATUS AND PRESERVATION

Where an article is corrected or retracted, authors should update repository records with the relevant status and notice link where possible. Do not present an earlier copy as an unqualified current version when a material notice applies.

Author deposits support dissemination and redundancy but do not, by themselves, establish participation in an independent journal-preservation service. Verified institutional preservation arrangements are described only under Digital Preservation.
