Revenue Sources

Revenue Sources

This page explains the revenue sources supporting the publication activities of Athena: Journal of Social, Culture and Society. Financial information is presented separately from manuscript assessment and editorial decision-making.

1. ARTICLE PROCESSING CHARGES

Article Processing Charges (APCs) constitute a source of revenue for Athena. Applicable APCs are charged for manuscripts that have received a formal acceptance decision, as specified in the journal’s author-fee policy.

APC revenue contributes to publication operations, including editorial administration, article production, online publication, DOI-related processing, digital dissemination, and maintenance of the publishing platform.

Current amounts, payment timing, other applicable charges, and waiver or discount arrangements are maintained on the APC / Publication Fees page. That page provides the authoritative fee schedule; amounts are not duplicated here.

2. DISCLOSURE OF ADDITIONAL SOURCES

If additional financial or in-kind support is received for journal operations, its nature and source will be disclosed on this page, with links to the relevant detailed information where applicable.

Such arrangements may include publisher subsidies, institutional support, grants, sponsorship, donations, advertising income, or other publication-related revenue. These examples describe possible categories and do not establish that Athena currently receives them.

The publisher’s provision of publishing services, an editor’s institutional affiliation, or the display of an indexing-service logo does not, by itself, demonstrate financial support from that organisation.

3. JOURNAL FINANCING AND RESEARCH FUNDING

This page concerns financing of the journal’s operations. Funding received by authors for an individual research project is disclosed in that article’s Funding statement under the Conflicts of Interest policy.

An organisation paying an author’s APC does not, solely through that payment, become a journal sponsor or acquire a governance role. Any separate sponsorship or institutional arrangement must be identified explicitly.

4. RELATED FINANCIAL AND EDITORIAL POLICIES

Revenue sources must not determine manuscript acceptance, rejection, or action needed to maintain the scholarly record. The safeguards implementing this principle are defined in Editorial Independence.

  • APC / Publication Fees: Author charges and payment conditions.
  • Sponsorship Disclosure: Identified sponsors, forms of support, and their roles.
  • Advertising Policy: Whether advertising is accepted and the conditions governing its placement.
  • Open Access Statement and Access Policy: Reader access arrangements. APCs are publication charges rather than charges for readers to access the journal’s open-access articles.

5. UPDATES TO REVENUE INFORMATION

Material changes to the journal’s revenue model will be reflected on this page and the affected policy pages. Changes to author charges will be explained on the APC / Publication Fees page, including their effective date and applicability. General verification and maintenance arrangements follow Governance Transparency.
